Twenty years ago, one year after the Berlin Wall fell, filmmakers Gabriele and Mark Hayes produced a documentary about the impact of German reunification on everyday life. This documentary was seen some twenty years later by Justinian Jampol, director of the Wende Museum and Archive of the Cold War in Los Angeles.
The Wende Museum was looking for an event to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the reunification of Germany. A documentary would be ideal. Gabriele and Mark agreed. They had been thinking of producing a new documentary combining some of their older footage with new material that would include interviews with politicians, musicians, comedians, and everyday “ Ossis” and Wessis.” Now they had a goal – to finish the project in time for a Wende Museum event commemorating the twentieth anniversary of German reunification.
They began shooting One Germany, The Other Side of the Wall in June of 2010 and a rough cut was finished in time to screen at the Wende Museum event on October 3, 2010.
